Indonesia Open Grand Prix Gold: Sony Dwi Kuncoro slays Sho Sasaki in Men’s Singles quarter-final
Indonesia’s talented player Sony Dwi Kuncoro made his home fans elated by playing remarkable badminton in Men’s Singles quarter-final when he outplayed his higher ranked opponent Sho Sasaki of Japan at the Indonesia Open Grand Prix Gold Badminton 2012 in
Indonesia, on Friday, September 28.
The lower ranked Kuncoro, who is World Number 32 and fifth seed in the main draw of the championship, was on a different level while playing against the second seeded Sasaki who has been placed at sixth position in the Men’s Singles world ranking.
Kuncoro played with confidence as he did not hesitate in executing powerful shots in all areas of the court and managed to end the winning run of Sasaki by showing him exit in three games with a wonderful margin.
The second seeded Sasaki, on the contrary, was unable to put up strong resistance against the spirited play of his lower ranked local challenger and eventually lost the match in three games while working hard for 59 minutes.
The opening game was incredible fast when both participants employed all of their skills to take lead but no one could manage a reasonable gap until the break.
After the interval, Kuncoro played impressive net shots followed by powerful smashes in right areas which assisted him to claim the first game with a 21-17 score on the board.
In the second game, Kuncoro again played good badminton in opening points and reached at 7-7 when Sasaki started to pace up rallies and managed an 11-7 lead until the end of first half.
After the break, Kuncoro employed all of his skills on court but failed to get close to his Japanese rival and eventually lost the second game with a 14-21 score on the board.
In the decider, Sasaki was leading the game in opening points but failed to maintain his upper hand as Kuncoro played incredibly aggressive game and took an 11-8 lead until the break.
After the interval, Indonesian shuttler continued his staggering play without showing any mercy to his Japanese challenger and bagged the final game with an inspiring margin of 21-13.
Kuncoro won this quarter-final contest in an elevated fashion with an interesting 21-17, 14-21 and 21-13 margin on the board.
