Indonesia Open: Juliane Schenk overwhelms Sapsiree Taerattanachai in Women’s Singles first round
Germany’s best shuttler Juliane Schenk found a tricky start as she narrowly defeated Sapsiree Taerattanachai of Thailand in Women’s Singles first round at the Indonesia Open Premier Super Series 2012 in Jakarta, on Wednesday, June 13.
The World Number 8 Schenk, who is the eighth seeded shuttler in Women’s Singles main draw of Indonesia Open, worked extra hard to oust her stubborn Thai opponent.
The eighth seed Schenk played to her full potential in the whole fight and defeated her talented Thai challenger in straight sets with a tight margin by taking 47 minutes in the court.
Sapsiree, on the other hand, showed her brilliance by putting up superb resistance to her German opponent throughout the battle but remained unlucky in the concluding points and lost the match with a narrow difference on the score board.
In the first game, Sapsiree stunned her higher ranked challenger by playing flawless badminton. She was impressive in her execution of shots and took a staggering lead of 7-1.
However, Schenk immediately changed her tactics in the court and started to keep the bird low in order to keep Sapsiree away from the net cord. She managed to end the difference by reaching at 8-8.
Schenk continued her positive play against her Thai opponent and set up an 11-8 lead on the board until the end of first half.
After the interval, Sapsiree again played with precision and pushed Schenk in all corners of the court by taking the bird early.
The score remained equal at the concluding phase and reached at the dramatic stage of 22-22 when Schenk played aggressive shots and took the game with a close margin of 24-22.
In the second game, Sapsiree again showed her aggression and also kept her higher ranked rival under pressure. She matched the pace of rallies and remained stick around her opponent on the score board until the one-minute interval.
After the break, both ladies remained consistent in their positive play in the court and reached at the ending phase without creating gap on the score board.
However, it was Schenk who again controlled her nerves at this crucial situation and won the set with a tight score of 21-18.
Schenk emerged as the winner in this 47-minute close contest with a 24-22 and 21-18 score on the board.
