Indonesia Open: Tommy Sugiarto stuns Chen Long in Men’s Singles first round – Badminton news
Indonesia’s elite player Tommy Sugiarto cheered his home fans by playing remarkable badminton in Men’s Singles first round. He outplayed the China’s Chen Long at Djarum Indonesia Open in Indonesia, on Wednesday, June 12.
Sugiarto, who is an unseeded player in this championship, showed a wonderful performance and easily registered a convincing victory over the second seeded Chinese challenger while taking just 39 minutes.
The local player showed a surprising performance and sailed smoothly in the opening set. However, he had to employ all of his skills in the following game and remained successful in winning this battle with a convincing margin of 21-11 and 21-18.
Meanwhile, the higher ranked Long failed to maintain his upper hand over his aggressive local challenger. He could not play his normal game and eventually lost the match without winning even a single set.
With the wonderful aggression, Sugiarto dominated the pace from the starting points of the first game. He was in complete command and took a comfortable lead at the initial stage.
Sugiarto did not face any trouble from his experienced opponent in the first half and he easily managed a wonderful lead until the one-minute break.
After the interval, Long tried to close the gap by playing attacking badminton but failed to get any considerable advantage as his Indonesian rival was perfect in his defensive play.
The impressive Sugiarto continued putting up wonderful show and remained successful in wrapping up the opening game with a stunning 21-11 total on the score board.
However, it was a superb fight in the second game when Long showed a few glimpses of his brilliance. He executed powerful smashes followed by net killings and remained close to his local opponent until the end of opening half.
After the break, the contest continued in the similar interesting manner and both shuttlers progressed neck to neck. The score reached at the concluding phase of second game but none of the participants could manage a comfortable lead.
At the ending points, it was Sugiarto who played with wonderful aggression and managed to end up the set with a huge margin of 21-18 and finished up the match in a tremendous fashion.
