Indonesia criticises BWF’s decision to allow China to compete in Thomas Cup Preliminary Round
Indonesia’s team manager Mohamad Faryansyah severely criticised the decision of Badminton World Federation (BWF) to allow China to compete in the Thomas Cup Preliminary Round, which is in progress in Macau.
It was a wrong decision on the part of BWF because being the host country; China has already qualified for the Thomas Cup Finals, which will take place in Wuhan in May.
Faryansyah also indicated that this move of BWF will harm badminton as it is an open favour to China which is completely against the spirit of the game.
It is a general impression that BWF takes such decisions that directly or indirectly go in the favour of China and the current decision of allowing China to play in the qualifying round strengthens this impression.
Moreover, Faryansyah also warned BWF that if this trend continues, badminton will lost its status in Olympic Games and will be dropped from the mega event.
According to Faryansyah, BWF took two wrong steps to give China a favour which is quite disapproving for all other badminton countries.
BWF allowed China to play in qualifying matches which was completely unnecessary as China has already qualified for Thomas Cup Finals and secondly, BWF cancelled the Asian Badminton Championships and the Thomas Cup – Uber Cup Preliminary Rounds will be considered as Asian Championships.
The Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) opposed BWF’s decisions by sending them a protest letter but it produced no good result as it remained un-noticed.
Faryansyah said, "BWF should not have allowed China to play here (in Macau) and it doesn't make sense for the Asian Championships to be cancelled because that is an individual championships. BWF has bowed to China's pressure and allowed them to play in the qualifying rounds just because it is an Olympic qualifying event.”
He further added, “They want maximum representation in the Olympics and are using any loophole in the rules and regulations of BWF to achieve their aim.”
Faryansyah further added that BWF needs to take neutral decisions in order to promote game at international level.
He also said that if things continue proceeding in the present way, badminton will be dropped from Olympic Games.
