Indonesia is gradually losing their supremacy in the world of Badminton – Badminton News
Indonesia’s supremacy in the world of Badminton is fading away gradually and their chances of remaining among the top badminton nations have diminished. Indonesia has always remained among the top five nations of the world which includes China, Korea, Malaysia
and Denmark.
It is the only country that has won gold medals in all World Championships and Olympic Games. The country has produced top class players who earned fame and glory for their country. Badminton is religiously followed in Indonesia, as a huge number of shuttlers
from all areas of the country have represented Indonesia at international level.
The poor performance by Indonesian shuttlers in the All England Premier Super Series 2011 and Swiss Open GP Gold 2011, has cast doubts on the future of the game in the country.
Indonesian shuttlers have always been among the top five spots in all categories of the game, but now they are gradually going down in the world rankings. Indonesia has never remained short of talent, as badminton is a very popular game in all regions of
the country.
At the moment, Indonesia has only one spot in the top ten players, in almost every category of the game. It clearly indicates that the level of the game is declining in the country. This downfall is affecting the performance of players in individual events,
as well as in team tournaments.
Indonesian ladies won the biggest team event, Uber Cup, last time in 1996 and male shuttlers won the equivalent event of the Thomas Cup, in 2002. Since then, the country could not compete with the most dominating team China, in these mega team events.
Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia is considered as the most talented and successful player in Indonesia. He won the gold medal in the 2004 Athens Olympics and also won the 2005 World Championships in the Men’s singles category. The Men’s Doubles pair of Markis
Kido and Hendra Setiawan won the gold medal in 2008 Beijing Olympics.
In the 2012 London Olympics, the chances of Indonesia to win gold medals have become bleak.
Experts of the game say that the level of the game in Indonesia is gradually falling and if things proceed in the same way, Indonesia will not be able to remain in the top nations of badminton. If quick measures are not taken to produce better players, then
the country will lose their status among the top nations of the world.
The Indonesian Badminton Federation (PBSI) is working hard on different programmes to elevate the level of their player’s game. The most prominent factor that is causing the downfall of the game is because the government is not organising frequent badminton
events in different regions of the country for picking up young and talented shuttlers.
After the selection of these players, a comprehensive training program should be designed for them to eliminate the impending danger of the downfall of badminton in Indonesia.
The Officials of PBSI want the involvement of more and more people in this game and they desperately need the attention of the government to take the matter seriously. Indonesia has been ruling the international arena of the game for several decades, but
now it is struggling hard to maintain their traditional performance, which is gradually diminishing with time.
