Indonesia proudly leads the points table in Men’s Singles category at the Indonesia Open
Indonesia, which is one of the most dominant countries in the world of badminton, proudly leads the points table in the home event of the Indonesia Open, since the start of the championship in 1982.
Nine cities in Indonesia have organised the event so far. However, Jakarta has been serving as the venue for this prestigious home event since 2004 to present.
In the 29 editions of the Indonesia Open, Indonesian male shuttlers have clinched 21 titles in the Men’s Singles category, whereas, Malaysia is at the number two spot by winning 4 titles. China and Korea have won thrice and once, respectively.
In the inaugural edition of the Indonesia Open in 1982, Icuk Sugiarto became the first Indonesian who bagged the Men’s Singles title in the presence of all top shuttlers.
In 1983, Liem Swie King continued the winning run of Indonesia by winning the Men’s Singels title. In the following edition in 1984, Lius Pongoh of Indonesia raised the flag of his country by grabbing the Men’s Singles title.
In 1985, China stopped the winning streak of Indonesia in the event, when China’s Han Jian became the title winner in the Men’s Singles category. However, Icuk won his second title at the home event in 1986.
China’s most famous shuttler, Yang Yang, grabbed the Indonesia Open title in 1987. In 1988, Icuk clinched the title for the third time in the history of the event. In 1989, another Chinese shuttler, Xiong Guobao, became the new claimer of the Men’s Singles
crown in this championship.
In the following three editions of the Indonesia Open in 1990, 1991 and 1992, legendary Indonesian shuttler, Ardy Wiranata, remained the winner of Men’s Singles title. Another mighty Indonesian, Alan Budi Kusuma, clinched the Men’s Singles Crown in 1993.
Wiranata again emerged as the winner of the crown in the following two editions of the Championship in 1994 and in 1995. In the following year of 1996, Joko Suprianto became the new champion of the Indonesia Open. However, in 1997, Wiranata won his sixth
Men’s Singles title in this prestigious event.
In 1998, Yong Hock Kin of Malaysia made his presence felt in the Indonesia Open, when he emerged as the winner of Men’s Singles crown. In the edition of 1999 and 2000, Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia, who is currently the World Number Two rank holder, claimed
the title in his home tournament.
In 2001, Marleve Mainaky won the Men’s Singles title in the Indonesia Open. However, Taufik claimed three titles in a row in the years of 2002, 2003 and 2004. In the next edition of the event in 2005, Lee Hyun iI of Korea became the new champion. In 2006,
Taufik levelled the record of Wiranata by winning the sixth title in the Men’s Singles category.
In 2007, the Indonesia Open was given the status of a Super Series event by the Badminton World Federation. Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei, who is currently the World Number One, clinched the Men’s Singles title in 2007. In the next edition in 2008, Sony Dwi Kuncoro
of Indonesia won the title back for his country.
In the last two editions of this championship in 2009 and 2010, Chong Wei emerged as the winner of the Men’s Singles crown. The Malaysian is all set to defend his title in the upcoming 2011 edition of the Indonesia Open.
