Indonesian shuttlers clinch Men’s Singles and Doubles titles at the Indonesia Open Grand Prix Gold
Indonesian shuttlers impressed the home crowd by clinching two titles including Men’s Singles and Doubles on the final day of the Indonesia Open Grand Prix Gold. The event concluded on Sunday, October 2, at East Kalimantan, Indonesia.
In the category of Men’s Singles, Indonesia’s Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka defeated higher ranked team-mate, Tommy Sugiarto in the final of the tournament.
Moments later, Indonesia’s World Number Six, Bona Septano and Mohammad Ahsan thrashed Japan’s Kenichi Hayakawa and Hiroyuki Endo in straight games in the Men’s Doubles title match.
World Number 27 ranked shuttler, Rumbaka, played terrific badminton and won the Singles title in a Grand Prix Event at home for the first time. He played wonderful badminton against the World Number 19, Sugiarto and ended the contest in straight sets.
Rumbaka, who lost the final contest of last year’s Indonesia Open GP Gold against Taufik Hidayat, remained successful this time by making his mark over Sugiarto. In the opening set of the game, Rumbaka controlled the rallies from the starting points and
continued his power-play until the ending points. He won the set by a five-point difference of 21-16.
Rumbaka continued his remarkable run and wasted no time in finishing the second game by the margin of 21-17. The two-set final showdown ended with a 21-16 and 21-17 margin. After losing the match, Sugiarto said, “Today I’m not as fit as when I played Taufik
yesterday.”
In the Doubles category, Ahsan and Septano showed their class when they tamed Hayakawa and Endo in the final battle. The Indonesians remained focused and positive throughout the match and finished it against the nervous Japanese duo by a 21-13 and 21-14
score on the board.
While speaking about winning in a home event, Ahsan said, “We are happy and grateful to be able to win our first title of the year and also defend last year’s title here. Our opponents appeared to not play their best, maybe because they were nervous because
of the local supporters.”
Indonesia’s title winners in the Singles and Doubles categories have got precious points which will help them in getting a better place in the draw of the 2012 London Olympics.
