Indonesian shuttlers need to perform well to qualify for 2012 London Olympics – Badminton news
The gradual downfall of Indonesian shuttlers, particularly in doubles category, is alarming for the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) as it is getting tougher for them to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics, which will kick off from July 28, in London,
England. They need to perform well in all upcoming international events to qualify for the mega event.
In all categories of Doubles including Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles, the Indonesians have been trailing far behind the top shuttlers from China, Korea and Denmark.
It was not a good year for the Indonesians as they could manage to win only two Super Series titles, which came through the World Number Four couple of Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir, at the India Open Super Series 2011 and Singapore Open Super Series
2011.
The quivering performance of Indonesian shuttlers has made it difficult for them to qualify for the London Olympics. The qualifying round will end on May 1 and the Indonesians need to perform well in upcoming events in order to find a better place in the
draw.
Christian Hadinata, the national head coach of Doubles, said that the main target of PBSI is to get as many players in the main draw of London Olympics as possible. However, he also said that it depends on the performance of shuttlers in the forthcoming
tournaments.
He said, “Our peak target is still the London Olympics. So, if we can win Olympic gold, all those failures in securing prestigious titles this year will be disregarded. I believe chances are still open for us. However, that depends mainly on each shuttler.
How bad they want to play at the Olympics will determine their willingness to train harder and to be more disciplined and motivated.”
The coach also expressed that all shuttlers need to work hard to get maximum ranking points to ensure their places in the Olympic Games.
He said, “We are not in a safe place yet. Thus, in the remaining months our main target is to improve each player’s [world] rank.”
Now, Indonesian players should prove their worth in the upcoming tournaments to achieve better results and get higher world ranking in their respective categories to find a berth in the mega event.
