Indonesia’s Tommy Sugiarto makes his mark by winning a major title of his professional career
Tommy Sugiarto, an emerging shuttler from Indonesia grabbed the biggest Men’s Singles title of his professional career, as he won the Yonex Chinese Taipei Open in tremendous fashion.
World Number 21 shuttler, Sugiarto is the son of Icuk Sugiarto, who is a former World Champion from Indonesia. The young Sugiarto started his professional career in 2005 and worked really hard to secure the status which he has achieved now.
The Indonesian made his presence felt to the world and he is expected to enter into the top-20 players of the world in the upcoming world rankings of Men’s Singles, which will be revealed on Thursday, September 15.
Sugiarto has been playing remarkable badminton in the current year as he clinched the Men’s Singles crown at the Fajr International Challenge which was held in Iran, this February. In July 2011, the spirited Indonesian clinched the Men’s Singles title of
the 2011 Indonesia Open International Challenge.
However, victory in the Taipei Open made him feel very happy as it was the biggest of his career. He defeated Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk of Thailand in the Men’s Singles final of the Taipei Open in a thrilling fight which took three sets of top standard badminton.
After winning the final match against the Thai shuttler, Sugiarto said, “I’m very happy with this victory, especially because I beat several of the world’s top shuttlers here. I’m more confident in myself as I’ve continued to improve this year.”
The Indonesian was the sixth seed in the Men’s Singles draw and he played with passion throughout the championship. He made his mark over Saensomboonsuk in their first meeting by beating him in three games with a margin of 21-15, 15-21 and 21-17.
The Indonesian won the first game by playing dominating badminton, but his opponent made a powerful comeback in the second game and levelled the match. However, the Indonesian delivered an inspiring performance and won the final game to claim the Men’s Singles
crown, which is now the most impressive title of his career.
