Indoor plants - what are good ones to have? What should I do for them?

I want to have A LOT of plants in my bedroom. I love plants and think they make for a very soothing atmosphere. I currently have 6 plants, 5 of which are thriving. I have two big windows which face North and West, so I get plenty of light. It usually is around 65-75 degrees Fahrenheit in there, but the air is pretty dry. What are some good indoor plants that are easy to take care of, and grow well? What's a good routine for taking care of the plants? How often should I put plant food in the water? Thanks so much.

  1. Spider plants (also called airplane plants) are absolutely the best.

I like growing all kinds of herbs indoors.  Rosemary, basil, lavender, lemon balm, mints, thyme, oregano, sage.  Not only do they make attractive foliage and also grow well in containers, but they're useful in cooking (the taste of fresh herbs is AMAZINGLY BETTER than dried, and store-bought fresh herbs are expensive... it's a great solution to just grow them yourself).

I also like succulents, like aloe vera, for a little variety.

(If any of these ideas catch you, google the name of the plant with the phrase "container", for example "rosemary container grow".  You'll get specific information on how to keep each plant healthy.)

    Happy growing!

  2. i would get Zebra plant, it needs alot of humidity, it would go excelent in the bathroom, when you take a shower with hot or warm water it will get its humidity!! look it up on the web

  3. I agree, the mother-in-law tongue is a good one. Also peace lilies, which are so pretty when they really start filling out with their glossy dark green leaves.

Ivy has always been one of my favorites, and they're so easy to propogate... you can just cut off a piece and stick it in water and it will grow into an entire new plant!

Ficus is a good one too. I know the braided trunk ones are popular, but I like just a plain ol' natural look.

  4. I have a zizi plant and it is very low maintenance and looks great all year. I also have a plant that has a large fig like leaf. It does really well indoors too. Mother in laws tounge or aka snake plant is also a common is to grow house plant.

  5. North gives low light, so Peace Lily is a good choice.  West gives bright light, so flowering plants would work well (African violet).  I also like Spider Plant, Asparagus fern,  Dracena, Diffenbachia, Snake Plant, Polka Dot Plant, Croton.  Have fun!
