Induction question(s)?

Next Tuesday night I'll be going in to get induced- save me the don't do it stores- it's medically necessary, they found fluid around our little girls heart and I'll be 39 weeks. ANYWAYS- just wondering about induction stories. Did anyone start with Cervidil the night before and have that send them into labor? They are starting me with that around 11 pm and then starting a Pitocin drip the next morning. How long were your labors after starting the Cervidil and/or Pitocin? Was it your first? were you dilated at all when you went in? Were you given an e***a at all? I've suffered from BAD constipation throughout my pregnancy and I'm afraid I won't "go" between now and then and it will be a mess when I deliver. Did you sleep at all after the cervidil was inserted? Any other information would be GREATLY appreciated!

  1. There is no reason not to do an induction at 39 weeks, even if its only for mental reassurace. Usually cervidil is usued to "soften and efface the cervix" but for some women it gets them into labor.  I have been induced twice, never having cervidil, was already dilated to 5 cm at 39w5d, not in labor and bag of water still intact and it took me 12 hours with pitocin.  My second baby was induced at 38 weeks, my water had broke at 17w1d, I was dilated to 2 when they started and it took 4 hours, but only 45 min from 4cm to delivered.  An e***a is not a standard of care anymore and is rarely usused.  You could request one but you may still p**p during delivery, and if you do its no big deal.  It happens a lot and no one will care.  I understand it makes you feel uncomfortable so you can ask if you want.  Sleep is hard because of the nature of the event, you excited/ nervous and its hard, but usually you can until contraction become painful, which is usually after the pitocin is started.  Good luck and congrats.

  2. i was induced by firstly breaking my water and then putting me on the drip. i wasnt dilated at all when they started.

    this was my first baby.

it is very restricting as u have to be hooked up to a monitor to watch babies heart and ur contractions plus the drip also so i was pretty much stuck in the bed the whole time . i didnt get any sleep at all, i was in labour for 17 hours and then had a csection bcos baby wasnt coming down.

    good luck.:)

  3. Stop worrying hun, you will be taken care of in the hospital. I will tell you a bit of my story. I had my first child with Pitocin. I had my water break early that morning (4am) but  I found out in the hospital that I did not dilate yet. Well, the Pitocin took about 6 hours to kick in and then I started to gradually* feel the contractions. So I began to dilate too. I had the baby after 6 more hours. I was not given an e***a, I think that was taken place years* ago, they don't do that anymore. During my early contractions the nurses let me get up and go to the bathroom otherwise, don't worry, the nurses and Doctors are used to the ladies having accidents on the delivery table. All that pressure that comes with pushing is not something new to them, don't worry. Or they may give you those lil* potty thingies under you. :) And you may never know if you did have an accident through all the business. You will have a great time enjoying your baby afterword!!!

  4. With my first i was induced-she was 2 weeks late, no dilation.  they started me with the cervidil at midnight and the pitocin drip several hours later when the cervix was ready.  i could not sleep that night at all due to jitters, and excitment-- but i was not in any pain at all from the cervidil.  My labor lasted a good 17 hours and the pitocin was pretty intense-.  i ended up getting an epidural at about 14 hours and i was so glad i did, because it allowed me to relax and it actually sped up labor.  they did give me an e***a at one point which was NOT fun, but i am glad i was clean for delivery :)  they finally broke my water when i was about 5-6 cm and the doc said it would be a good hour before i delivered--he was way off.  i dilated to 10 with in 20 min. and pushed her out in 5.  my doc didnt make the delivery.

I had such a wonderful experience with my first baby.  My second was wonderful too,  totally different from the first--water broke then 7 hours later a beautiful little boy!

    Good luck to you!!

By the way I am being induced on Tues too!! at 9:30 am.  This is my 3rd baby - a girl and she just doesnt want to come out yet--(I guess she still has a few days though)

  5. I was induced with my first child last year, and my experience was quite pleasant.  I was only 1 CM dialated when I went in for induction at 41 weeks. They put the Cervidil on my cervix at about 8 PM and then gave me a sleeping pill. I slept like a rock.  In the morning (9 AM) the doctor broke my water.  That started the contractions.  I didn't need Pitocin.  Contractions were tolerable for a few hours and grew closer and closer. (For me the contractions were easier to manage while I was in the shower with a chair to lean over. Everyone is different though.)  I got the epidural around 12 noon, and then went to sleep for a few hours.  At around 4 PM I was fully dialated. They turned down the epidural and I felt the urge to push.  The baby was out in 15 minutes.  He was a big boy (9 1/2 lbs) and I tore, but that's the worst of it.  They quickly sewed me up and cleaned up the baby, and I was walking around holding my son within 1/2 hour.

I hope that helps.  Good luck to you.

  6. Come on ladies answer!! My doc is talking induction!! I'd like to see what you all have experienced too!!

  7. Here is my non horror story:

I was induced due to preeclampsia and was givin the pitocin drip right away because I was 3cm 80% effaced and at +2 station.  The gel was not needed in my case.  Before all of this I explained to my doctor I wanted to avoid a c-section as much as possible. So I was given the drip 10:30 in the morning, then each hour the raise up the dose until you start feeling contractions.  I didn't start active labor until 3:30 pm.  BE READY, really.  You will not ease into labor you will not experience contractions every 5-7 minutes, it will jump start.  Mine started at every 2 minutes lasting 45-60 seconds. So be ready okay. They turned the pitocin off, the doctor came in at 4 pm, checked me and I was 4 cm.  He broke my water and  then the contractions were one right on top of the other.  I couldn't breathe so they gave me an oxygen mask.  I fell asleep in between a contraction and then a contraction woke me up.  I was so mad I ripped off the mask and blood pressure cuff and told them I wanted to go home.  It was around 6 pm and they checked me I was 7 cm.   Then a half an hour later I felt the strongest urge to push.  The nurse checked me and I was 9.5 cm, but the baby was still at +2 station (they need to be at +4  to deliver).  So she left the room to call the doctor and ask when I could start pushing.  She told me I had to wait.  So I sat there for an hour fighting the urge to push and then I started pushing and couldn't stop.  So the nurse kept telling me I needed to stop pushing otherwise I would hut myself and the baby.  I couldn't so I asked if I could get the epidural to stop pushing.  So I got one.  It was heaven.  Then once I got the epi, they checked me and I was 10 cm.  It was about 8 pm by now.  I fell asleep woke up because it felt like I was sitting on something, told the nurse and the doctor came in and I pushed my son out in 15 minutes.   No tearing, no c-section, no horror story.  I think my labor went pretty smoothly and could not have gone better.  Especially when the baby didnt want to go lower, the nurse and doctor handled everything perfectly.

I strongly suggest chapstick and when your in labor you will be glad you have it.  All I can suggest is be prepared and don't stress out.  Everything will be good.  Early congrats and hope you have a safe and healthy delivery.

  8. I am fairly certain that Cervidil is to ripen your cervix and you will probably sleep fine. The Pitocin I have had and it just starts your contractions If you are having an epidural(highly recommend) It's no big deal. As for the "mess" ask your doc if you can take colace so that you can go between now and then. Either way you will be so intent on your labor your bowels will be the furthest thing from your mind.

  9. I had an induction with my first child at 37 weeks to the day.  I had PIH and they felt it was medically necessary to induce my labor.  I was only 2cm.  They put me on a Pitocin drip at around 12:00n (an hour after my appointment) and delivered the baby at 1:20a the next morning (night for me).  It went fairly well, I didn't have an epidural.  They broke my water when I was around 7cm to speed the process, as there were about five other women delivering that same evening!  I didn't have an e***a and I didn't p**p on the table, but I could've cared less either way.

    Good luck!

  10. hmm... I cant help u with ur question, sorry... but i was wondering y don't u go for c- section? are there any medical reasons y u cant?

  11. No on the cervidil.  I went in at 7 a.m. and had a Pitocin drip.  No e***a, but I don't think you will need to worry about the constipation.  The contractions will help clear your colon during labor, and even if you do "p**p" during the delivery, it's not a big deal, as they've seen it before.  It won't be considered anything other than normal.

Pitocin can bring on very heavy contractions, but you will move right along.  I don't recommend having an epidural because it can stall labor.

The only difference between inducement and the  natural labor is that the process is being started before your body would have started it on its own.

  12. I was induced at 41 weeks (No dialation, no thinning no nothing at this point). I went in on a Friday night at 7pm, around 11pm they started with Cervadil, nothing happened with the first Cervadil, so about 3 am they put another one in, about an hour later that one kicked in, contractions were in full swing, at that point I was about 5cm dialated. They allowed me to get my epidural and put me on pitocin to keep it going. Around 8am I was about 8 cm dialated, then at 10:47 after about 10 minutes of pushing my son came out. So many people will tell you that getting induced is really bad. But that was my first and I didnt think it was that bad. I am not gonna lie, the contractions hurt (thank god for the epidural) but everything went pretty fast. Best wishes to you hun! Any questions please feel free to ask!

  13. I had 5 pregnancies....4 babies and ALL were induced for medical reasons.  All were done just as you described. With each of my children the labor went faster.  Is this your first one?  With my first it was 36 hours BUT he wasn't in a very good position to begin with....the 2nd was like 12 hours, the 3rd was about 9-10 hours and my last one was just 6 hours....I had epidurals with them all too!  I wasn't dilated at all with any of them but my cervix was soft and effaced at least 80%  with each one.  My second baby was the only one where the cervidil started labor.  If you are really feeling like you should have an e***a ask your doctor to order one and they can do it when you get in there before the cervidil.  Hope this has been helpful to you!!  Good Luck and God Bless!  We hope everything works out for you!!  :)
