Indy De Vroome upsets Yulia Putintseva to reach the semi-finals of Girls’ Singles – Wimbledon 2011
Another seeded player crashed out in the quarter-final draws of Girls’ Singles at the Wimbledon Championships on Friday, when Indy De Vroome of Netherlands registered an assertive win against the seventh seed Yulia Putintseva of
Russia to reach the semis.
The one-sided contest lasted for just one hour and fourteen minutes, with De Vroome settling the final scores at 6-3, 6-1, to dispense out the Russian from the quarter-finals of the Grand Slam tournament.
The unseeded Dutch faced no real difficulty in taking down the in-form Putintseva in straight sets. She took off the opening set with commanding aggression and sustained the winning momentum throughout the contest to come out as
the winner in the end.
De Vroome was phenomenal with her serve game, delivering 61 percent of it on target and securing 23 out of 31 first serve points in the matchup. She conceded 13 unforced errors as compared to the Russian’s nine, but compensated
for it very well by cracking 22 winners all over the court to remain on top of the game all the time.
The seventh seed has been in sublime form throughout the tournament but failed to put up a decent fight against the belligerent Dutch on Friday afternoon. Putintseva’s game lacked the required aggression, which has earned her victories
in the initial round matches and she appeared totally out of touch in the quarter-final.
The Russian had eight chances to break her opponent’s serve in the matchup but frittered away seven of them, converting just one in the entire the contest to finish on the losing side in the end. Her bleak serve was broken five
out of eight times by the Dutch competitor, who cashed in most of her opportunities in the game en route to victory.
De Vroome took hold of the opener early, breaking her opponent’s serve in the very first serve game to lead 2-0. Putintseva replied with the same in the very next game but faded away her momentum very quickly. The Dutch launched
a series of forays to the opponent’s court and stung two consecutive serve breaks to seal the first set at 6-3, getting one up in the contest.
Dutch dominance reached its peak in the second set, with De Vroome absolutely devastating her opponent to push her out of the competition. She broke Putintseva on two more occasions to conclude a comprehensive victory at 6-1, getting
a date with the 12th seed, Ashleigh Barty of Australia, for a place in the final of Wimbledon Girls’ singles.
