Emergency team quickly rushed to the scene and a put a neck brace in order to stabilize the young racer. He was put on a stretcher and was taken to the hospital.
According to the witnesses the young boy was alive, when he reached the hospital but was pronounced dead after a few hours.
Lenz was declared dead due to a blunt force trauma by the doctors after an autopsy was conducted. He is the youngest driver to ever die at the more than hundred year old Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It’s the first death since Indy Car racer Tony Renna passed away in late 2003.
On a facebook page dedicated to him a post said “Peter passed away early this morning when he was apparently struck by another rider. He passed doing what he loved and had his go fast face on as he pulled onto the track. The world lost one of its brightest lights today. God Bless Peter and the other rider involved. 45 is on another road we can only hope to reach. Miss you kiddo,” signed by his Dad.
Reports say it wasn’t the first crash that Lenz faced, last season due to a mechanical failure he broke several bones, but recovered by November after an extensive surgery. The accident is certainly going to create a riot in the media, as to how young drivers can observe safety measures while competing in the world leading tracks.
Jeff Belskus CEO of Indianapolis Motor Speedway gave his sincerest condolences to the family, stating “Our hearts go out to the parents, family and friends of Peter Lenz. Words cannot adequately express the sadness of our company and our employees about this tragic incident, and Peter is in our thoughts and prayers.”
The young teenager was already considered a professional to the sport; he won numerous races throughout his short career. He is a well-known racer in his age group and it was an unfortunate event for the family. Xaveir Zayat who drove over Peter Lenz belonging from New York, escaped any injury and did not compete in the tournament after the accident.
