Inexpensive Quality Video Camera Question...?

I really enjoy making movies on my friend's camera, we've screened some stuff, nothing big but fun to do. Anyway, he has an old sony camera, It works well. The mics are great and I'm stuck with a lame camcorder. No audio jacks, the film doesn't look very good, etc. Anyway, he's going to San Francisco for the entire spring and I want to continue filming this year. Unfortunately, he's taking the camera with him and my friends expect a better level of quality then my camera can produce.

Anyway, long (ish) story short, I need a semi-professional camera with audio jacks and good film fast. The only problem holding me back from buying some 15 Thousand dollar camera is my budget. I'll end up needing to save some money for anything over 1.5K. So my budget would have to be 1K - 3K for a nice, professional camera with audio jacks, nice video and all the other essentials a camera would need. I plan to shoot a 45 Minute film with my friend who can edit film very well, but got his camera stolen.

  1. Least expensive camcorders with mic-in jack and manual audio controls: Canon HV20, HV30, Sony HDR-HC7 and HC9.

Maybe the Sony HVR-A1U or HVR-HD1000U.

Then there is a big jump to the Sony HDR-FX1 and Canon XHA1.

Then there is another jump to the Sony HVR-V1U, Z1U, Panasonic DVX100B and HDX200.

Don't spend all your money on the camcorder - you will want a couple of mics, tripod, rechargeable high-capacity battery...
