Back-packers/youth hostels.

Just google Melbourne backpackers or Melbourne youth hostels for a selection.  There are others around Victoria also (eg. in the Grampians or down the Great Ocean Road).

Hotel Discovery is a backpackers and is well situated and a fun place to stay. Has a rooftop terrace and a bar as well as washing facilities etc.

there are lots of backpackers in melb, one on Fitzroy st above Elephant Wheelbarrow (great pub), lots to do in StKilda
