  1. For that budget the Dominican Republic is your choice.

    Juan Dolio/Boca Chica

    Punta Cana/Bavaro

    Puerto Plata

    Samana

  2. "Inexpensive" and "Caribbean" and "Christmas" don't really go together, unfortunately.  You could try looking at TripAdvisor.com, especially since you want "inexpensive".  You can read past guests' comments to find out whether that cheap AI is even worth what you'll pay.

If you're going with family, you might consider renting an apt/condo.   Since you'd have cooking facilities you could save some money.   Look at HomeAway.com.

If you're interested in Mexico, look into Cozumel.  It might be a bit cheaper, but it's also a bit less accessible.  But it's very nice.  [The #1 place listed there - Villas Anclas, I think it's called - has refrigerators and maybe microwaves and is inexpensive.  It's not on the beach, but the owners also own a beach club, I think.]  Be aware, however, that Coz is a big cruise ship destination and is likely to have several ships in port on weekdays.  [You can check that out at CruiseCal.com, if you're interested.]

You could also check out companies like Apple Vacations and Cheap Caribbean.  [They have websites.]

Good luck - I hope you find just what you're looking for.

  3. We have traveled to Dominican Republic at Christmas time and didn't spend a fortune. Start checking out resorts now. We like the Puna Cana area  because of the Caribbean beaches . But we have stayed in the Puerto Plata area with family and the kids loved it. They liked all the activities available on that side of the island. I think Dominican Republic has the best prices for all-inclusive. With kids you need all-inclusive. Our grandkids are always hungry.

Here are some site to research resorts and prices.

    http://www.funjet.com

    http://www.libertytravel.com

I would also check with your local travel agency for any special package prices. They often will match what you find on the web. Sometimes they are cheaper. Also you don't have to pay up front, a deposit will hold your reservation.

    Good luck and enjoy)
