Hello, I am trying to choose a changing table. 24 wks with my first, it's a girl! I am trying to decide between a changing table that has open shelves under the changing top, or drawers...any suggestions? Thanks!

  1. First of all, I just wanted the point out the I LOVE my changing table. Many people will tell you they didn't use theirs much, etc., but we use ours 12 times a day. We also hung fun toys above it so our daughter doesn't try to roll away...

Anyway, I prefer the ones with drawers. THey're usually a little more expensive but worth it. They hide the clutter better and things don't fall out as easily.

    Good luck!

  2. To be honest with you, you will not use the changing table as often as you think and I would spend money on extra big dresser instead....you are going to find that you will be changing your baby on the couch or floor more than you will anywhere else....a changing table is a cute piece of furniture for 1st time parents that don't realize they will never use it....Congrats on new little girl.....

  3. My daughter is 15 months and I still use her changing table. The one I have is open shelves. It is easier, but let me warn you. Once your girl becomes mobile, everything on those shelves ends up on the floor all through your house!! Congrats on your pregnancy!!!

  4. honestly you will only be using the change table for the first couple of months, as soon as your baby can roll over it is safer to change her on the floor to prevent accidents. You will be surprised if this is your first how fast she will grow out of the many extras that are bought like baby baths, swings bouncers etc..

  5. Contary to the prior poster, I used my changing table for 2 1/2 years. (Until my daughter was potty trained.)  She never rolled off it or even tried. And the shelves held all of her clothes, as well as the diapers,  saving the space/expense of a separate dresser.

I would buy one with open shelves. Easier to grab what you want if you don't have to open drawers. (And you can't stand in front of it if the drawers are open.)

  6. Despite what others say, I have used and I am still using Emma's changing table at ten months old.  I have one with open shelves....it was from Target and very inexpensive and has held up well.  I bought cloth baskets from Wal Mart and put three on each shelf...each one holds something like diapers, lotion, sheets, burp clothes, etc.  We could not have done without the extra storage.  If your only having one baby, you may want to go with a drawer type that converts into a dresser.  If your having more than one, go with the convinence of open shelving and you can always re use it or yard sale it.

  7. buy the convertible one with drawers that way you can continue to use it as a dresser after you no longer need a changing table.

  8. Open shelves, because if you need to grab anything, it's right there. Also they look really nice with lined baskets to store rash creme, etc.

I will tell you though, you might find (like I did) that changing them on a changing pad on your bed is easiest, then you can sit down! LOL

    Congrats!!!

  9. At 24 wks you should postpone buying anything. Your OB should have explained 35 wks is the recommended gestational age for purchases.

God forbid you were to go into preterm labor, until 28 wks survival is slim.

  10. i personally bought a dresser with drawers, it doesn't look like a "changing table". i am going to put the changing pad on top of it. that way i will be able to continue using the dresser for years to come and it won't be just a temporary piece of furniture.

  11. Open shelves for sure for the same reason others have given.

My son is two and i still use the change table for him. i am very tall so it it great not having to bend down to much. When he was smaller and started to roll I always made sure I held him with at least one hand so he could not fall off.
