Question:

Infant throwing up formula but not apple juice?

Our son (3 weeks old) has been diagnosed with acid reflux. The Doc has him on Enfamil Prosobee Soy based formula. He throws it up everytime he eats. He also threw up the soy based Similac we tried. We've tried adding diluted rice cereal to the formula...and he throws that up. We tried a few ounces of diluted apple juice and he keeps that down. What gives?

  1. DEF too young for juice unless directed by your doc...if you are still having probs check back with your doc instead of asking ppl here...don't just keep changing formulas, that alone can be rough on baby...check with doc before changing formula....throwing up and spitting up are different, do u know the diff? if not, read up...

AND as always and predictable, MYSTIC feels the need to throw in her breastfeeding c**p when she has no idea why this child is on formula NOR is it any of her business.........perhaps she has it backwards, so let me explain...breastfeeding is an ABILITY , not a SKILL.....you again throw in your c**p to a ? that has absolutely nothing being asked even in the same ballpark as 'should i breastfeed?' GIVE US ALL A BREAK

  2. why aren't you just breastfeeding him?  That's all he needs is breast milk and water not fattening formula and juice.

  3. Heres a tip. Dump the pump.

If you haven't breastfed before, you won't get your milk flowing with a pump alone. You need to get that baby onto the breast, only the nursing and sucking pattern a baby has stimulates the b*****s properly.

Even women inducing lactation are told this.

Consult some breastfeeding websites and read up on the tube feeding method.

  4. I can't believe you gave a 3 week old baby apple juice.  I really can't.

The apple juice probably passes through the digestive tract too quickly to come back up.  That's one of the reasons fewer breastfed babies suffer from GERD.

    Edited to add:

Not having breastmilk can be a sign of a serious underlying medical disorder such a hypothyroidism, diabetes, PCOS, or anemia.  It can also signal retained placenta.  It is ridiculous to ignore a warning bell like that and any decent doctor would be concerned.  There are of course drugs and supplements that can prevent milk production as well.

There are also medications that can help bring your milk in.

Breastfeed or not -your choice.  However don't buy into this "some women can't breastfeed" and endanger your own health.  Not producing breastmilk is not a good sign, its not normal, it should be taken seriously.

Similarly I wouldn't have much faith in a doctor that recommends apple juice for a 3 week old -particularly one with digestive problems already.  Apple juice is acidic and you are giving it to a baby with acid reflux?

I think its time for second opinions for both you and baby.  But of course I'm just some whacko on the internet.

  5. Not as thick. Talk to ur doctor again.

  6. Have you tried lactose free milk, not soy.  We use Good Start with comfort proteins and it works well for us.  Good luck

  7. I would suggest trying a lactose free version of the formula. It is possible that he's having an allergic reaction. It's also possible that he is mucus-y in this throat. Formula is a little bit thicker and often coats mucus, making babies throw up. That would also explain why the juice goes down so well but not the formula. If switching formulas does not help you, I would contact your doctor. Your child needs the nutrients from formula but if he's throwing it all up it's not helping him at all! Good luck!

  8. My little girl was able to keep down the apple juice also. She still spits up alot but my doctor says she is keeping down more then she spits up so that is good. I hope you get a better doc then I had. The only thing we have done is add a little cereal to the bottle and not feed her so much and it works most of the time!
