  1. Most infant seats are only FAA certified as safe for a child under 22 pounds.  The next step up is the bigger seat, which you can use for children 5-40 pounds, and it will go in rear-facing until your daughter is a year old.  They're really cheap, too.  You can get one at Walmart or Target for under $50, and she'll be able to use it for the next couple years.

  2. You can change her now to the next seat.  You just have to make sure she still seats rear facing until she is one.  The law says that babies can sit forward facing at age one AND 20 pounds, it has to be both, not one or the other.  You can by a toddler seat that switches from both rear facing to forward facing, so that way you save money.  If you have a babies r us store by you I would reccommend going there.  They have a large selection and the staff is very helpful, they will even carry it out to your car for you.  They have car seats there that range all the way from $50- $300.  They also every so often have a special seminar and show you how to properly install them.  Hope this helps and good luck!

  3. Check the weight limit on her seat.  Many seats can only go up to 22 lbs, though some accommodate up to 30 lbs.  When you switch to the convertable car seat you need to keep it in the rear facing position until she is 1year AND 20 lbs (must be both, not one or the other!).  Then continue to keep her rear facing for as long as she can comfortable sit in that position  :)

  4. You can change it now I did even though they say a year old the weight is okay to change now

  5. if you are using the car seat that snaps into the stroller, i would change it now.  many people keep their kids in there forever and it's dangerous.

just get a rear/forward facing convertible seat.  install it with the rear facing.  after 1 year/20 lbs, you can change the seat to forward facing.

  6. contact your local fire department or ambulance company about the best car seat and installation.

  7. Infant seats are outgrown when a child reaches the weight limit, or more commonly when the child has less than one inch of plastic shell above his head.

Infants then move to a rearfacing (RF) convertible seats and MUST remain RF until at least 1 year AND 20lbs, but should remain RF until the limits of the seat (30-35lbs in the US).

The recommendation from safety experts and the American Academy of Pediatrics is to rearface (RF) to the limits of the seat which is 30-35lbs on all convertible car seats sold in the US. My daughter rode RF until she was 3 ½ and would love it if she still could, but she reached the weight limit on her Britax Marathons and had to be turned FF.

I have included several links with great pictures and videos of what happens to children’s necks when they are FF in a crash.

Most people are concerned about their child's legs being scrunched or broken in a crash. There is absolutely no evidence that shows a child's legs are in danger and I would much rather deal with a broken leg, than a broken neck.

Highly recommended convertible carseats are the Britax Decathalon, Boulevard and Marathon; Sunshine Kids Radian; Evenflo Triumph ADVANCE; Cosco Scenera and Safety First Uptown.

Stay away from the Alpha Omega 3-in-1 seats only harness to 40lbs and most 40lb weight limit seats are outgrown before a child is mature enough for a booster seat.  They also have very low top harness slots, so are outgrown by height at around 2 or 3 years old.  The Graco Comfortsport also has very low top slots.

  8. if your are talking about changing her to forward facing it depends on the law where you live they can very slightly from state to state. try googling carseat laws or regulations with you state name i did california car seat laws because i live in California and it was at least a year AND 20 lbs (i might be off a little on the weight) but the imnpotant thing was that  there were two requirments of weight and age.

if you mena just getting her a biggerseat that just get on that is covertable from rear facing all the way to booster. they will ahve the weight RESTRICTIONS on the box
