My son was born 7lb 14oz... he is now 2 months old and weighs somewhere close to 18lbs. I feed him on demand - mainly breastfeeding but he does get the occasional bottle. (He has is 2 month check up tomorrow.) What was your child born at, and where was he/she at 2 months old??

  1. You can't over feed a breast fed baby, they will take only as much as they need. Having said that, your 2 month old baby weighs more than my 5 month old baby - she is only 13lbs! Although she was also only 5lb 9oz born (at 2 months she weighed around 7lbs). If there is anything wrong with your gorgeous, chunky baby, it will be picked up at his 2 month check. Otherwise, just enjoy the fact that you are feeding him so well, and he is thriving!

  2. my son did this SAME THING!! he over doubled his birth weight. brestfed babies do this sometimes, espeically boys. boys are always bigger than girls. he is 2 now, and has slowed way down. this is normal, and he is about to hit another growth spurt at 3 months, so LOOK OUT momma! my kid was 22 lbs at 4 months.

my sons dad is tall and thin. we think my son will do the same thing. get real fat and stretch way out.

  3. Babies gain weight and mass at different rates.

If you are feeding on demand then don't worry.

babies that are breast-fed tend to 'eat' what they want and stop when they want.

A baby may be really fat looking, but the fat will drop away when they start crawling and then toddling.

I admit, I forget what my kids weighed at 2 months but they all looked like beach-balls.

As soon as they got more active, they trimmed back down. Start to worry if that doesn't happen.

Don't let any medical staff try to tell you to change your babies diet because no matter what they say, there is NO average weight and size for a babies because they are all different!

By the way, congratulations on your new family member.

  4. Mine was born 8lbs. 9oz. and was about 11 lbs. at 2 months.  Usually babies double their birth weight somewhere in the 4th month, so having said that, yes your baby is obove average when it comes to weight, but it doesn't necessarily mean that something is wrong. If he's eating well, sleeping well, and is generally happy, then you just have a good eater (something many parents wish for).  I'm sure the doctor will let you know if something is wrong.

  5. He sounds like a hefty baby. It really depends on his length as well though. Babies grow at different rates. It is not so much about the weight but is he is proportion to his height. BTW you do need to be aware of keeping an eye on his weight because chunky babies have a higher risk of obesity as they grow older their are studies to prove it. Breast fed babies can and do over eat. Discuss your concerns with your pediatrician when you go in. I had to start my son on baby cereal about this time because he was just never full. He would start crying and want to nurse every time he smelled food. Good Luck,
