Infected goldfish help?

i recently had a goldfish die, and he wasn't left in the tank for very long dead, but when I removed him (in a clear bag) I saw a lot of white musty gunk floating around him-coming from him. Could he have been sick or is that apart of a decomposing fish? I'm worried he might of passed bacteria or something to the other goldfish so I changed the water and cleaned the tank, but will this even work if it was diseased?

  1. its the slime coat that goldfish have...tht comes off when they die...it also comes off when the water ph is messed up and more on the acidic side...it is a protective covering which should not damage when kept in good conditions...

  2. it was probably fungus.  use an aquarium fungicide just in case the other fish got it.  hope i helped:)

  3. I think that is just him decomposing. If any more fish die, it is safe to assume that it is fungus. Then you will need to go to the pet store and get some malefix and treat the tank.

  4. Probably just decomposing fish.  But you want to keep a close watch on the other fish in the tank.  Sometimes a fish will just not make it and that will not affect the other fish.  However if something is going on with your tank, they may all be affected.  It might be smart to treat the tank with antibiotics as a preventative, if you notice anybody else is looking poorly.

Goldfish are pretty tough little guys and can survive in conditions that will kill other fish. Make sure your tank is set up appropriately for Goldfish.  They like it cooler than tropical fish (you probably alreaaady know that LOL).  Great filtration is a must.  Frequent water changes (about once a week) are great if you are only changing about 1/3 of the total volume of water at any one time and the water you add is chlorine-free and at the right temperature.

    Best of luck.

  5. if you really want to be safe add rocksalt in your newly change water. to be safer quarantine everyone with rocksalt and good aeration and have a general cleaning on your tank.
