Question:

Infection from acupuncture needles?

Can you get an infection from acupuncture needles? I saw the acupuncturist several times about a year ago. I noticed since then that I have bumps inside my ear from where needles were. They are sore to the touch. They aren't pimples which makes me think they are due to acupuncture. Has anyone heard of anything like this or had similar trouble?

  1. It is a possibility if proper hygeine isn't followed.

If the needle is unsterile, bacteria can cause local infection. There is also a risk of contracting hepatitis, HIV or any other blood-borne disease if the needles are reused.

Injury to the skin - clumsy insertion, or entry of a needle into a blood vessel, can induce bleeding, bruising and pain.

You should go and see your doctor, who may refer you to a dermatologist to rule out things like cysts.

  2. Yes you can. Rebecca has answered that.

While acupuncture itself is mystical implausible nonsense, you have been scammed by the even sillier version of auricular acupuncture.

Infections on the ear are particularly hard to treat, and leave bad scars.   You may have some keloid scars.
