Robert Bowling did not join Activision’s rivals, Electronic Arts, as many anticipated, instead he opened up his own studio, Robotoki where he hopes “creative vision holders” get the environment they need to thrive.
For those who do not know, Robert Bowling was the person who took the Call of Duty series and transformed it into the force it is today. He became the face of the Modern Warfare games before resigning from his position at both Infinity Ward and Activision.
No reason was given for the ‘break up’ but in an interview Bowling voiced his disapproval of Activision’s DLC model and how he disagreed over charging recycled maps from previous games.
Judging by his statements after launching his own studio, Robotoki, it seems that one his disagreement with his former employers was the reason behind his move.
Bowling explained how he wanted to create a studio with “an environment where the creative vision holders (have) complete control over their work and (can) guide and maintain it from concept to execution.”
This seems to be the exact opposite of Activision and Bowling explained his vision for the studio by prioritising the work flow and process. He explained that the studio would focus on creating “a universe first, experiences second and game mechanics last,”
with each experience tailor made to the strengths of each device.
Bowling also expressed that he wanted to tap into the mobile gaming market as well as cater to consoles as well. However, his version of mobile gaming is one that involves more than just simple mechanics and artwork but rather a more deep and engaging experience.
The studio has already been busy and reports have emerged that Robotoki is set to announce their first game by the end of the year. The game is rumoured to be available not only on PCs and mobile devices but also on next generation home consoles.
It sounds interesting and another studio in the market means increased competition and it would be interesting to see what Bowling and Robotoki can add to the gaming industry.
We will have more on the story as and when it develops.
