  1. Ask the doctor for a referral to a physical therapist or occupational therapist.  They will treat the problem with hands on treatment not just the use of modalities.

  2. Richard C is correct.  An occupational therapist is best qualified to deal with hand and wrist disorders.  However, they're not always on top of things.  I had a similar pain, and I believe that one of the causes was several weeks of intensive mouse-work on a very precise computer mapping project.  My MD referred me to an occupational therapist and her treatment seemed to be somewhat effective.  During one treatment session, I noticed a box near the therapist's office PC.  It contained a wireless mouse that could be operated from a variety of positions, with an array of buttons and triggers that could be programmed for comfortable use.  Asking if it was something she recommended for hand problems, the therapist replied that someone had ordered it a while back for their own office use but never got around to installing it.  I bought one myself and found that using it helped much more than the therapy.
