i am fixing up my old car and wanted to know some things about the breaks.

like what kind of pads i need to buy if i was having someone else fix my breaks.

and whether or not it had drums or something else in the back and front for breaks.

i dont know a whole lot about cars so i dont really know what some of that means but i have to go shopping for these items so i was hoping i would know a little more about what i was looking for.

thank you.

  1. The easiest thing to do is to go to your local auto parts store and tell them what model and year car you have. They will sell you the correct part for you vehicle and you can proceed from there. You might also call your local Ford or Mercury dealer and ask the parts department clerk what type of pads you need for your car. The dealer prices are higher but if you need info only they are a good source.

  2. odds are you have front discs an rear drums but you won't know till you get your hands dirty and take off the wheel.  Discs look like a disc and drums look like a dome that looks like nothing because everything is inside.  For pads an shoes I'd go with raybestos or akebono or hawk the cheapo pads they sell at autozone & pepboys and such are terrible now days.  But again you won't know what you need till you look.  Are the front pads worn out? Do the rotors need to be cut or replaced? Do the drums just need adjustment or shoes? These are the quesiones to ask yourself when you take off the wheel.  Good luck

  3. a 96 grand marquis? nice ride!on that car, it probably takes semi-metallac pads and it probably has drum brakes on the back.it has rotors on the front.

  4. Your car has disk brakes on the front, drums on the rear.Go to Auto Zone or Advance and buy the front pads and rear shoes with a lifetime warranty they don't cost much more. Also buy the new spring and mounting pin packages for the rear. Again, not expensive. You'll also need a spray can of brake parts cleaner, a large can of brake fluid, and a couple of tubes of anti-squeal adhesive for the front pads. That's all the parts You should need. Whoever installs your parts should check to see if the front rotors or rear drums need turned (machined to correct high and low spots) or possibly replaced. If you have a good mechanic this will give you the same brakes the car had when it was new. Buy the parts yourself because most mechanics will mark up the parts prices a little.Your brakes could mean your life. Don't take shortcuts.the parts aren't terribly expensive, If your mechanic is fair with you, a whole new brake system won't break the bank.Best of luck, Smart move.!
