Question:

Info On Thompson Boats.....?

I've been around boats for a couple of years now, but never heard about Thompson's. Not sure of the year or exact modal, but guessing it's a mid 80's and it's a 21 ft cuddy with trailer, 7-10 people, porta potty ect, 165h Merc, been in salt water but I only have fresh water. Says it's water ready, just needs batteries and wiring for the starter and soon some vinyl. I know nothing about Thompson boats, but the guy is moving and it's a great(?) deal. But are these boats money pits or will I just hit a wake and breach the hull and be a complete loss? Any intelligent answers would be fantastic! Thanks.

  2. When I read your question, I passed on answering it.  But, you didn't get much info.  Thompson has a good reputation in the runabout/fishing boating community.  The only issue on these boats is what engine it has.  The 165 merc. also has a good reputation, so far so good.  I'd give no more than $1500 for a boat in great condition, AND I'd want a test run.  Put it in the water and drive it for an hour or so at speed.  Yes, maintenance is expensive, but the boat has depreciated about as far as it's going too.  You need to be prepared to budget several hundred for fuel and routine maintenance this year.   Good luck.
