Has anybody had experience with Newfoundlands? Are they easily trained, loyal, friendly, smart, etc?

  1. I did a great deal of research on the breed when getting my last dog (books, websites, called and talked to breeders, etc.).  What I got from my research was that they are of average intelligence, but very eager to please.  This means they will generally learn a command quickly, but may not be the best problem solvers when it comes to applying their training to an unfamiliar situation.  They are very family oriented and love to be right with their people (will sit on your lap if you let them!).  Most are very friendly with everyone (strangers included), but some are a bit more wary of strangers unless introduced by their owners.

As large breeds, they do eat a lot (and therefore leave a lot of mess in the yard, lol).  They shed heavily, drool when hot, hungry, or after eating/drinking, and tire quickly as young dogs.  You have to be careful in the food you provide and the level of exercise until they are done developing (2-2.5 years).

I ended up with a Mastiff, but only because with all the drool, I didn't want to deal with all the hair too!  I think they are wonderful dogs with wonderful personalities.
