  2. High Line was a foal of 1966.  In 17 starts, he won 9 and was only unplaced once, and three times won the Jockey Club Cup Stakes.  He was a grandson of the immortal Hyperion out of a French-bred mare, and was noted more for stamina than for brilliance on the racetrack.

I think here in the USA, he's best remembered (If he's remembered at all) as the sire of Master Willie, who won the Benson and Hedges Gold Cup, Eclipse Stakes and Coronation Cup.  Windfields Farm, the breeder/owner of Northern Dancer, was at that time looking ahead to the time when Northern Dancer would either die or be pensioned from stud.  Windfields payed a ton of money, plus some future breedings to Northern Dancer and some of the other stallions they owned, in order to secure Master Willie.

While not quite a failure at stud (he sired 22 stakes winners, the best of whom was either Deputy Governor or Master Speaker, both earners of over $600,000), Master Willie certainlly didn't pan out as a replacement for Northern Dancer, and was deemed a disappointment by Windfields.

Anyway, in Europe High Line sired the good fillies Dubian and Shoot a Line.  Shoot a Line was joint top-weighted 3-year-old filly in England in 1980.  Dubian was a champion in Italy.

Shoot a Line foaled a filly to the cover of Storm Bird in 1987.  Named Line of Thunder, this filly was Group I-placed (Cheveley Park Stakes).  It was as a broodmare that she made her impact:  to the cover of Gulch, Line of Thunder produced Thunder Gulch, who won the Derby, Travers, and Belmont stakes and has proven to be a somewhat spotty sire; Spain is his best offspring, and after that probably Circular Quay, but most of his offspring are uninspiring.
