There's various versions, they all deal with the temptations of satan. No. 44 The Mysterious Stranger is probably the most complete and deals with Satan trying to convince an Austrian of the futility of life and therefore the acceptable nature of moral flexibility.

It's one of my favorite Twain stories despite the fact it was unfinished in his lifetime.
