Question:

Info on kayaking with children?

Hello! We're thinking of getting two single kayaks and have tried some that have a very large open cockpit - around 48" - so easily accomodated having one of our smaller children in with us. We don't necessarily want to spend a fortune (the one I really like is $399 on sale but was very comfortable, stable, and easy to handle). Would it be better to buy that or try a cheaper used one that may not be as open or comfy?

Are there any other considerations? We'll definitely take safety courses and always wear life vests. We won't take the kids out on rough waters either.

Thanks so much in advance for your input!

  1. Hi,

The best advice I can give would be to at minimum buy tandem kayaks or sit on top (open) a closed kayak could be very dangerous with a child on your lap if something was to go wrong. No matter how much training you have it could be ugly.

Also you may want to consider a Kayak with a rudder system if you are looking for maximum stability.

If you do not have much money as Tandems can be expensive find a nice used one. Also you may want to look at canoes.

Kayaking is a great family activity. Have fun.
