I need to know if I am driving to Guadalajara, Mexico and I have been here in California for more than 25 years. I have a green card, I am a citizen now but I am taking my two sons with me that was born here too. They are taking their school ID's and their birth certificate. Is that all they will need to go and come back? Then next question is I know that I have my insurance from here but I will also need additional insurance to cover us for over there and I remember from years ago where I had to stop at the Mexican Consul for something not sure what but need to know everything I'll need to legally go and come back?

  1. If you want to know travel information of Mexico then you can find it from  http://www.stayresmexico.com. I hope it willbe helpfull for you.

  2. You will need to carry your citizenship papers and a photo I.D.  Children under 18 need their birth certificates.  if they are teenagers it is really a good idea to get state I.D. cards for them.  You will need a Mexican car permit...see 2nd site and Mexican car ins...see 3rd  site for my favorite.  You will get your tourist cards at the border.  You should also get a Mexican road atlas, the Guia Roji.  Can buy it at big bookstores or order at Amazon.com.  Also, if the boys are under 18 and  their mother will not be with you, you need to carry a letter of permission from her to take them out of the U.S....needs to be signed and notarized.  This is Mexican law.  See 4th site and read section on minors under "Entry Requirements."

  3. First, your sons school ID will not work to cross the border.  It has to be a government issued picture ID.  Maybe you can take them to the DMV and get an identification card (how old are they?).  Your insurance in the U.S. is not valid in Mexico and you will have to purchase Mexican insurance....but it is very cheap and here is a link to do that....

If your car has U.S. plates your will have to purchase a car permit which can be done at the consulate or at the border.
