I desperately want to look up information on Archeology and more specifically Egyptology but neither are in they Occupational Oulook Handbook. (They are subcatagorized under social science). How much do they make? How many years of school do they have to take? What are the working conditions, etc. (And anything else that's interesting for that matter)

  1. My sister is an archaeologist. Her income is derived from her teaching job at the university. She is not tenured yet, and so only gets as much pay as she can be allowed classes to teach -- around $50,000. In order to qualify for tenure, she has to publish her work. In order to publish her work, she has to do field work, and to finance the field work, she writes grants. So now, she's not making all that much, but she loves what she is doing. That is success.

However, once she gets a book published, there's more money for her. If she can get a text book published and then require her students to purchase her book for class, there's more money. If she can get a resume of published papers and lectures, she can charge more for lectures.

If you are going to do one of the above, do it because you love it. Not to get rich, because you probably will not.

  2. 'Egyptology' is just one type of 'archaeology' which is a subject, as you've realized, is under the broader term of 'Social Science'.

My website 'Egypt and Beyond' deals with articles, questions and discussions of, not only Egypt, but also their contemporary cultures/civilizations and other historical and archaeological subjects....You are welcome to join, or just e/m me @

To answer you question succinctly.....with a BS/BA you would be roughly considered an 'archaeological technician'....very few earn much and you usually have to pay to do it....but if you are interested then go to your search engine and look up

'archaeological jobs'....or find 'The Digger' which lists jobs...

With a Masters you may be able to find a paying job, but I, personally, would also get an 'ED' degree to teach [if you only are interested in a BS/BA], or with a Masters....a Jr. College.

In the arch. community usually the real money is short in supply and is mostly for the Phd. who heads the program [if he/she is lucky enough to get any money budgeted from a college or uni.]

We who break our backs, get muddy, dirty, tired etc. do it for the absolute LOVE of the job!!!!

  4. They usually make 35 to 40 thousand base. But it increases with more experience, and naturally prof. and museum curators make the most  at maybe 80 to 100k.

  5. these are occupations of continuous learning.  You will never stop studying at they are primarily research professions, with a bit of field work thrown in to satisfy the romantic "Indiana Jones" feelings.
