There are two car ferries across the Gironde.  The northerly one goes from Royan to Pointe de Grave, the most northerly point of the Gironde peninsular, and avoids the long detour round Bordeaux.  Ferries run about every two hours and more frequently in summer.

The second, smaller, ferry links Blaye to Lamarque harbour thus giving access straight to the heart of the Medoc from the Haute-Gironde and vice-versa.
