I need more information about Medicaid. How do I apply? What do they cover for pregnancy ? Do you pay them monthly like an insurance company? I just applied for Anthem Blue Cross Blue Sheild and my doc said she thinks thats one of the health insurance companys that dont cover ultra sounds etc. Any information about Medicaid would be helpful. Thanks!

  1. If you are already pregnant, no individual insurance policy will cover pregnancy. As far as the insurance not covering ultrasounds, if there is a medical necessity, there is coverage. Ultrasound is a common and necessary diagnositc procedure especially when receiving care for a pregnancy.

Medicaid has many varying eligibilities to qualify for pregnancy. Google your state and medicaid for the website. Many times, your income can be 400% of the maximum to qualify.

  2. Medicaid is generally a social services program.  You should be able to go to your state's website and apply, view guidelines, etc.  Medicaid is generally for low income people, people on disability and elderly people on fixed incomes already on medicare.  Some states also offer a step up from state sponsored medicaid for those with income limits that exceed "free" medicaid, where you pay a premium for the coverage.  You could also go into a social services office and apply.  The guidelines for qualifying are based on your income, dependents, whether you have affordable health insurance available thru you or your husband's employer, etc.
