Does anyone know whether it is possible to persue a pharmacy career after obtaining a masters in chemistry and if so how? Do I need to spend more time studying/training to become a pharmacist? If you could help me, it would be life-changing?

  1. Yes, you will have to go back for pharmacy training in order to become a pharmacist.  With your chemistry background it should be a breeze.  In the US the only degree offered now is a 6 year Pharm D degree, but you can probably apply many of your undergrad credits and accelerate through the program.

  2. Uk wise You would probably need to start from year one as there a some fundemental units that are a prerequisite for the rest of the course.

I suppose if you had a one to one with the course leader of MPharmacy and the lead tutor for pharmaceutical chemistry you would reach an arrangement re; how much chemistry you need to do.

The subject is all embracing and requires disciplines in pharmaceutics, law, pharmacology Etc... But I am sure that with your masters in chemistry some of the course will come naturally.

  3. In the U.S., you'll need a PharmD (4 years) degree to practice pharmacy.

  4. If you do a chemistry degree, you are more into the pharmaceutical industries bit, like working with GlaxoSmithKline ans stuff. However, it is possible to pursue a career in pharmacy coz some companies will offer you training..

But I'd rather go for pharmaceuticals coz its more money and has a lot in common with pharmacy as well, and it is more money!

  5. A bit late to change your mind now! Pharmacy degrees often have a common first year with other science degrees but start to diverge after that. You would need to take your degree transript to an admissions adviser and go through it together to see what you'd need to take. You'd have to self-fund and of course you'd still have to do your year's pre-registration after graduation. (advice for UK courses)
