  1. Before they do kidney transplant, they do tissue matching to make sure that the donor and the recepient DNA match, so there is a great chance the kidney will not be repelled by the recepient's body and it will work out fine. Twin brother or sister are the best donors. If not they prefer siblings. Siblings are better donors than parents.

However, there is no 100% garantee. I know a woman who gave her kidney to her daughter and the daughter died.  I also know someone to whom a complete stranger gave a kidney and she is doing just fine and has a normal life and it's been six years after surgery.

The kidney can be repelled within a year or even more.  But the first days and weeks are critical.

Your relative will be on immunosuppressant medication for the rest of their life because dornor's kidney is like a foreign body and the recepients immune system knows it.

The side effect of taking immunosuppressants is, naturally, lowered immunity, so one should stay away from cold and infection. If the person is diabetic, the post-surgical wound is going to take longer to heal.

On a big run, it's in God's hands and let's hope for the best. Good luck to your relative.

  2. mom had a transplant 7 years ago and hasn't stopped going since. 6 cruises ,and off to Mexico every winter to escape the cold. she resumed a normal life almost right away . my other friend Had one about 6 weeks ago and his wife is blown away with the difference in him " like night and day " don't worry it will either work or not, and there is nothing special any one can do to effect it.  the transplant team must be fairly sure it will work , or they wouldn't be doing it

  3. Things go quite well these days w/ renal transplants. the new kidney will sit in the pelvis hooked up to the bladder. So, when your relatives wound heals you can actually feel the kidney; if your into that kind of thing. The real threats are chronic rejection and immunosuppressive medications.
