  1. The different colors are different kinds of quartz, such as topaz. It is found in the earths crust but if you click on the word topaz at this link there are more specific locations such as Russia, Australia, New Hampshire, Colorado, Brazil, Mexico, Utah, and so forth. It is not exclusive to the earth. Asteroids, moons of various planets, and so on may have quartz on them.

  2. It's found everywhere.  It's the most common substance on the Earth's surface.  When quartz (SiO2) wears down, it becomes sand.

It's found in any mineral considered a silicate, and it's a component of some (stoney) meteors, so it's found in space as well.

The different colors are the results of impurities or exposure to radiation when the original crystal forms.

Amethyst (purple) is from the inclusion of ferric iron

Citrine (yellow) is from the inclusion of iron hydrate

Rose quartz is from manganese or titanium

Adventurine is fron goethite or mica

Smokey quartz is the result of radiation

Rutilated quartz is clear with dark needles of the mineral rutile running through it
