  1. Tebs is right, but there is more.

The syllable "An" is as old as Sumerian. It made its way into many divine names, such as Anatha, Diana, Rhiannon, fairy folk known as the Tuatha de Danann, Arianrhod, and Mary's grandmother, Anna.

Mary is a variant of Marie, or sea. The ocean in Spanish is called mar. The Mediterranean Sea is, in Latin, Mare. It even works its way into mermaids and mermen. Annamarie combines the grandmother with the holy mother of Jesus, a most propitious name.

  2. It's been popular in Portugal, Spain and Italy as long as there's been a Catholic church in those countries. The history of it is that it's a combination of Anna and Maria...as in St. Anne and St. Mary. It's the same as "Michelangelo" being a combination of Michael and Angelo. It's a purely Catholic name and one that's extremely common in the history of all three of those countries for at least 1400 years.
