  1. Already there, my friend.  They're called "container ships," which moves the containers that are loaded onto freight cars that are then delivered by truck to final destination.

Inter-modal is an old story, actually, but it renders the proposition of a trans-oceanic crossing anywhere impractical and unneeded.

Even if such an undertaking were to break ground, by the time it could be completed and put into service, passenger rail travel will have gone the way of the dodo.  Hypersonic passenger air travel is in the offing, and a 55 minute flight from New York across to London will be possible.

My grandchildren now coming along will see it happen.  If the human race survives that long...  And if it doesn't, well then, we won't really need that transatlantic line now, will we...?

  2. The idea has been mooted that there could be a transatlantic line running from Europe, throught the British Isles, then 'island hoping', via the Shetlands, Faroes, Iceland, Greenland to Canada - with obviously tunnels between. I'm sure the idea is possible - whether costs will make it practicable is the main point. It all depends on the future fuel situation and whether nations want to go on with polluting aircraft.
