  3. India has drawn up a major 14-year action plan to protect wildlife, their habitats and people who live near wildlife sanctuaries.  The plan also includes restoration of degraded habitat outside national parks and sanctuaries:

The success of conservation efforts depends upon the awareness and commitment of traditional landowners, as well as the support of local conservationists and resource managers:

Jim conducts his own research, focusing on the Andean mountain cat and the guigna, and collaborates intensively with local scientists and volunteers who are leading work on other small cat species around the world. Collaboration with local scientists and volunteers has been a key to the success of these small cat studies.:

So far, WCS has found that management systems that are most responsive to the needs and priorities of local communities achieve the best compliance with management regulations and subsequently achieve the greatest conservation success.:

  4. I haven't done a lot of research into this but I have an interest in it and keep my eyes  open as I travel. Here are some thoughts-hope you find them useful.

Hong Kong has a 1st class governmental conservation effort and park system.Animals are protected and habitats are looked after well in an ongoing effort.

Just across the border in Guangzhou and Guangdong Province in China, It is a different matter. There is a government conservation and environment department, and there is concern about pollution, but everything in China is subservient to almighty progress Habitats are destroyed by the ensuing development and water and air pollution.

Concern about animals in Guangdong is another planet altogether. They eat them, every last one of them, from scorpions to toads and turtles and snakes and every conceivable type of mammal. The QingPing market in downtown Guangzhou is a bestiary of crawling and slithering animals of every kind and description.I have no doubt that if  a naturalist staked that market out for a few years he would find a new species of large animal. The animals in China are under tremendous pressure at the moment.

Farther south in Thailand, there have been pressures on the environment for a lot longer-from the Japanese demand for lumber felling the natural forest and replacing it with rubber plantations to the impact of backpacking tourists everywhere in the country. They have a National Park system that is world class however.Cambodia is too poor to do anything regarding conservation, and tourism is rapidly increasing in that small country.

Vietnam has a lot of totally wild areas and is again subject to the pressures of rapid economic growth.

Myanmar is being developed by the Chinese-so we already know what priority the environment and wildlife will have.

Hope you find this useful.I have concerns about the animals in this region.More world class National Parks are definitely needed in most areas here.
