  5. Hi!  I read the answers from a couple of the previous respondents and I need to clarify a couple of points.  I was born and raised in Chile... lived there 25 years... and ever since I go back once or twice a year.  So I feel the need to correct a couple of statements made:

First of all, the "volantines" are flown everywhere.  In a few neighborhoods (which I wouldn't recommend) you can find kids flying kites using "hilo curado" (string covered in glass) to cut strings from other's kites.  However, this isn't done countrywide.  It is extremely dangerous and not advisable.  If you go to the beach, it is common to find kids flying kites for fun and not with the objective of ruining someone else's entertainment.

Chile has several soccer teams.  There are two which draw the most attention as their fans are the rowdiest (Chilean hooligans): Colo Colo and Universidad de Chile.  There are also other large teams like Universidad Catolica and Cobreloa.

During September 18th, you will see many Chilean flags, but it is NOT mandatory by law.  My family never had a flag outside.

A few weeks ago, I answered another Yahoo! user's questions about Chile.  Check it out!  :)

  6. You should do your own research for your project.  A quick google search can tell you all of your answers.

That said, I'll give you some that aren't factual since they're a bit (though not much) harder to find.

Chilean children like to fly 'volantines,' or kites.  The game is played by two kids flying a kite.  Each kid then tries to get his kite's string to cut the kite string of his/her opponent.  Eventually, someone cuts the other kite's string, the kite goes flying, and the two kids (as well as neighbor kids) run after the kite, trying to catch it.  Whoever catches it gets to keep the kite.

The most popular soccer team in Chile is "Colo Colo."  People are obsessed.

In Chile, by law you must fly a Chilean flag on the Chilean independence day (September 18th).
