Myself and a friend are going to New Zealand in September for 3 months and then Oz in December I am looking for some information on what we should do with money and such. Should we open a New Zealand bank account or use our own. Should we bring cash with us?

Any information will help

Thanks

  1. A bank card that you can use in a hole in the wall is probably the best, with a small amount of cash for back up. Be sure to check your card is alright for here. Have a look at  http://www.holidays-in-newzealand.com/ne...

and click through to the page on the exchange rate as well. There is a lot of information on money matters for travellers in New Zealand there.Including the best credit cards etc - Mastercard and Visa are always good. American Express is not always accepted.

I think as long as you have a credit card that is accepted both in shops and ATM machines you will be fine. You can change money here at the airport if you don't get to do it sooner. I think to arrive with some cash is always a good idea.

Be sure to split it so it is not all in one place -  for safety reasons.

Enjoy your three months - that is a great length of time to spend here.

  2. Just take whole in the wall cards with you thats waht i did in OZ and New Zealand, travellers checks forget it. Just dont loose yor cards or your screwed.

If your backpacking like i did try hiring a car in New Zealand best way to see the place. and take the greyhound bus in OZ if your feeling daring you could hitchhike but i would not reccomend this.

  3. Car is definitely best way to get around but you should know that rental cars cannot be taken on ferries between north and south island. Auckland has most employment opportunities and some inexpensive rentals. Resorts like Queenstown have jobs (cafes, hotels, restaurants, construction) but housing is not cheap except in the off season when you might be able to rent a vacation home cheaply. But then jobs are harder to come by in off season. Nelson, Christchurch and Wellington are worth considering.
