Ok, so I have to write a paragraph about Peru's flag. I've looked everywhere for some good information but I can't find any. Help me?

I'd like to know what the simbols on the flag are and what they mean.

How the flag became to be.

Anything would be helpful. :)

  3. I'll give you the short version, not from Wiki (yeah, anyone can copy/paste) but from actual peruvians:

The flag is red-white-red (vertical stripes) and these colours came from the peruvian Flamingoes or Pariguanas when San Martin (the one who fought for independence) saw them flying in the sky of the Paracas bay. The red stands for the blood spilled in the independence war, the white symbolizes peace.

The shield in the middle represent all 3 kingdoms: Mineral, animal and vegetable. The vegetable kingdom is represneted by the Arbol de la Quina (or Quinine tree), the animal kingdom is represented by the vicuña and the mineral kingdom is represented by a cornucopia filled with golgen coins. The actual peruvian flag is the third one they designed, the first one had diagonal stripes, the second one horizontal (very much alike the Spanish flag so they threw that one away) and the third one with the vertical lines.

  4. Of course. General San Martín, argentinian, was the chief of an expedition that fought against the Spanish Crown; well, he was resting near the Bahía of Paracas (placed in Ica, about 200 km south of Lima, where few days ago it was an extreme earthquake) and he had a beautiful dream: many birds known as "parihuanas" with red wings and white chest  started to fly over the best beautiful country he hadever seen, where the people were worker and pacific, the soil and  sea rich and there was not poverty and explotation.

When he woke up, he said for itself: "He aquí la bandera de Perú: roja como la sangre de sus héroes, blanca como su espíritu indeclinable"  (more or less: "Here you have the Peruvian flag: red like its heros' blood, white like its brave soul)

Years later, was created the shield (escudo), that has three elements, one for each natural kingdom: the "árbol de la quina", an extraordinary tree whose roots and leaves is extracted the "quinina", an ancient medicin to malarieae; the vicuña (no llama, please!!!!!!) whose hair is considered the most fine fibre over the world from an auquénido (a camel family); finally, the cornucopia, from greek origin, symbolises the mineral abundance of Perú, mainly gold, Ag, Zn, Mo, Ni, Cu, etc

Try the encyclopedia britannica on line, key: san martin creation peruvian flag

  5. Flag of Peru - Description of the Peru Flag

As the above picture of the Peru Flag indicates the overall background is Red and white

The Peruvian Flag is described as three equal, vertical bands of red (hoist side), white, and red with the Peruvian coat of arms centered in the white band

The Meaning & History of the Peru coat of arms features:

A shield with the image of a vicuna which is llama-like ruminant mammal of the central Andes which possesses a fine silky fleece

A cinchona tree (the source of quinine)

A yellow cornucopia spilling out gold coins - a cornucopia is a cone-shaped ornament or receptacle with overflowing contents signifying prosperity - it is also called horn of plenty

All of theses items are framed by a green wreath symbolic of economy for the Tupac Katari ( an indigenous people of Peru )
