  1. salary depends on how long youve been on the force and where you live.... they deal with sensitive situations including hostage and drug tasks.... training involves weapons and tactical situations.

  2. Considering there are over 1200+ tactical (ie: "SWAT") teams in the US belonging to various Local, State and Federal agencies pay/salary is varied and dependant on the agency an officer belongs too. An NYPD ESU officers is paid differently to an FBI Field Office SWAT member etc.

    Some agencies don't pay any extra than an officers standard pay grade, whilst others agencies pay special allowances etc.

    As for jobs and training etc check out the following for a very basic idea to get you started:

    Here are a few situations that typically require a SWAT team call-out:

    * A high-risk warrant - If the police are going to conduct an arrest at a home, and they know the person is likely to be armed, they will call in the SWAT team to perform the arrest.

    * A hostage situation - SWAT team snipers are trained to take out an attacker who is holding a hostage in the event that negotiations break down.

    * A barricade situation - (siege) When criminals barricade themselves inside a building, possibly with weapons that are fired out at the police or civilians, a SWAT team can launch a powerful assault to end the stand-off.

    * A high-risk person - If someone needs to be transported, and there is a high chance of an assassination attempt on his life, SWAT team armored vehicles can serve as protection.

    * An armed terrorist attack.

    * A riot.

  3. SWAT teams respond to any call that requires more equipment than the average officer carries with him. This can be anything from hostage situations, to armed suicidal persons, or any situation where the suspect may be highly trained, or highly armed.

    The training is continuous and ongoing. After the basic SWAT school, you still meet on a regular basis to keep your skills up.

    The salary can vary greatly. On my department, there is no extra pay. Officers do it for the experience. Other departments provide extra pay, but it isn't that much more.
