Question:

Information on horse ownership costs in Ireland?

I would appreciate information on the cost of livery, vet, dentist, farrier, insurance, tack, actual horse, extras and anything else I might have forgotten.

(Only for Ireland and in Euros please)

(Please describe and specify types of livery, insurance, horse, tack etc. )

I understand that to give me an accurate estimate you will need to know what I plan to to do. I will just be riding as a hobby. It is unlikely that I will be competing. I am at intermediate level.

Everything appreciated so please reply.

Thank You.

  1. What county are you in? Prices will vary.

You also need to choose between full-livery, part livery, DIY livery or grass livery.

A lot of yards only offer particular types.

Full Livery - €100-150 a week (Yard takes care of everything)

Part Livery - €80-120 (Owner repsonsible with certain aspects)

DIY Livery - €50-80 (Owner responsible for everything)

    Grass Livery - €25-40

Make sure you ask the yard exactly what the terms of each one is because some expect different things to others.

Veterinary costs will depend on the horse's age but you can have a look a this for an estimate. It is for young horses but it will give you a rough idea http://www.client.teagasc.ie/docs/adviso...

I'm assuming it is a first horse so a horse could cost anywhere between €1500 and €5000. The website Donedeal.ie might be worth a look and you can say what various horses are selling for.

Sometime the horse will come with tack or you can get maybe arrange to buy it as well.

Here is a link to the saddlery I use http://www.holmesteadsaddlery.com/

You'll get pricing information there for you tack and the extras you'll need

Extras: Headcollar, lead rope, lunge line, rugs, grooming kit, boots etc.
