  1. www.ancestry.co.uk has a family tree listing for a William Shirtcliff marrying Mary Turner in 1809 in Babworth. At least 3-4 generations along each had a son also named William Shirtcliffe.

If the website I was just on (www.bradfordhistorical.org.uk/antiquary... ) is about one of his ancestors, it seems like the family name was SHERCLIFF to start out with in the 1580's or before, and when this William bought a manor house called SHETCLIFFE HALL, he added the "R" after awhile, and it became known as SHERTCLIFFE HALL, and the name changed its spelling over time. (To find this out, I just put WILLIAM SHIRTCLIFFE in the Search line and there were over 10 pages with different sites mentioning the name.

Was this your ad on http://www.curiousfox.com/history/nottin...  ??

    "Shirtcliffe - West Retford

My ancestor William Shirtcliffe was from Retford. He married a Mary Turner at Babworth in 1809. Any information welcome."

There ARE several generations mentioned on ancestry.com. The hard part is figuring out which one goes where (kinda hard to think straight at 2:30 a.m. LOL)

  2. UK answer.

I am a member of the Notts family history society, looking through the Parish registers dated from 1538 -1929, there is only one marriage close to that date, and that's a marriage between Samuel Shirtcliff and Mary BRIGGS, there is no lady with the surname Turner. The marriage for this couple took place in Tuxford Nottinghamshire on the 30th May 1808. The next closest marriage to that date is 1838 ?

I have all the  Parish registers here, Baptisms, Marriages and Burials.

I would be happy to do another search for any more information on the couple

Edit: I have just done a check of the Pallotts marriage index on ancestry.co.uk cant find it on there either.

    Hope this helps.
