Infra red cameras?

If a auto numberplate was heated above ambient would an infra red traffic control camera be able to read it night and day

I don't believe so....The infared cameras we use at work only show the difference in heat in a color format....ex....Taking a infrared image of a furnace will show the hot spots as a bright red while the cooler spots will be a dark blue.  I am not aware of the sensitivity of INFARED cameras in a traffic control camera.  I have seen video images of infared cameras used by the military and they only show heat as well in a color format moreso black and white and well enough to distinguish animals and people, but not well enough to read a numberplate on a vehicle.
