IR spectroscopy is generally used as one of many characterization methods to help a chemist determine the composition of a substance. This is done by observing the numerous absorbances that a compound displays and comparing those absorbance known values for different functional groups. In general, IR is used more as a tool to indicate which functional groups are present in a molecule rather than a conclusive method for identifying exact chemical composition.
