Inglorious favourite for Woodbine Stakes, Canada Triple Tiara first race
The Woodbine Stakes is the famous first leg of the Canadian Triple Tiara series (Canada’s Triple Crown). The race is more commonly known as the Woodbine Oaks and is run over a distance of 9 furlongs.
Donver Stables’ Inglorious is the new favourite for the Woodbine Oaks. He was declared so in the Oaks post position draw, which took place on June 2, 2011. Inglorious is now the official 5-1 morning line favourite.
Inglorious, the three-year old bay filly, will have the services of jockey, Luis Contreras. Inglorious’s trainer, Josie Carroll, has doubts about racing Inglorious in the Woodbine Oaks because she believes that the filly lacks the required speed.
She commented on this at the Wegz Stadium Bar by saying “If the pace is slow, I think there's going to be a whole lot of them kicking at the end. It will be interesting”.
Carroll has won the 2006 Queen’s Plate with Edenwold. Queen’s Plate, the oldest thoroughbred race in Canada, is scheduled to take place on June 26, 2011.
Inglorious, the Ontario bred daughter of Hennessy has a tendency to race well in a field where horses are not jam packed and either of the horses tends to surface as a pace setter. He is obliged to let other horses set the pace and he tends to remain within
striking distance before he launches an attack on the leader.
Since the field is drawing nine contestants, which would create a tight bunch of horses, there will be difficulty in finding passing lines.
However, there may be respite in this situation, as the daughter of Kitten’s Joy, who is a lightly raced mare, Spooky Kitten, owned by Roddy Valente, recently claimed her maiden at Turfway Park, and is capable of setting the early pace and favouring Inglorious.
She was also fifth in the La Lorgnette Stakes. She will be ridden by Edgar Prado. Spooky Kitten is trained by two-time Oaks winner Mark Casse.
Inglorious made two starts last year at Woodbine and won them. She will be drawing post number 3. She has scored wins three times in her five career starts. She made her way to the Oaks after getting hold of a smashing win in the La Lorgnette Stakes.
The La Lorgnette Stakes took place on May 15, 2011. She was seen rallying from off the pace and edging the other horses to get hold of 1 ½ length victory.
Inglorious was runner up in the Grade 3 Rachel Alexandra, which took place on February 19, 2011, and she stood fourth in the Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks, that took place on March 26, 2011. Both these races were contested on natural dirt.
The fillies running for this race have to run on a new synthetic surface, Polytrack, carrying 121 pounds. A field of nine is being drawn for the $500,000 pursed event.
Square Angel set the record for the Oaks in 1973 by completing the mile and one eighth in 1 minute and 48 seconds. The Woodbine Oak Stakes is to take place on June 5, 2011. Woodbine Oaks is a part of June 5’s race card, which also features the $150,000 Plate
Trial Stakes.
