The legendary Schalke midfielder has voiced his dissatisfaction at the club’s decision to honour Raul by retiring his number ‘seven’ for an indefinite period.
The former Schalke midfielder, Ingo Anderbrugge, reckons that the club bosses are honouring Raul more than what he deserves. He was talking after the officials announced to retire the striker’s number for an indefinite period once
he departs at the end of this season.
Raul’s contract will expire by the end of this campaign and the player will be available on a free transfer. The Spaniard earlier rejected a renewed one-year deal at the club citing family reasons. He will now test his skills somewhere
outside Europe possibly in the Major League Soccer.
Anderbrugge admitted that Raul is a big player and did extremely well to adjust at the Veltins-Arena after spending more than a decade with Real Madrid. However, he mused that the attacker does not deserve that special honour after
spending just two years with the Gelsenkirchen outfit.
While talking to Goal.com, the 48-year-old further added: "Firstly, I have to give Raul credit for what he has achieved at Schalke. Nobody thought after he left Madrid that he could play at Schalke at such a high level. Personally,
I would have imagined that Raul would hang on for another year at Schalke.”
On the other hand, the former Borussia Dortmund star mentioned that the same status should have been given to the former Schalke striker, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Klaus-Fischer-c21183, who spent a decade with the Royal Blues and made 305 league appearances netting
182 goals in return.
"With the retirement of his number, the officials want to show and honour the remarkable status he has at Schalke. But I think his time here was too short for such a decision. I rather would have retired the number of Klaus Fischer
than http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Raul-c30652, simply because he played longer for the club,” Anderbrugge concluded.
Anderbrugge represented Schalke in 316 league games during his time at the club from 1988-2000. He scored 82 goals during the process. The http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Royal-95-c40387 Blues are currently third in the league standings with 57 points, one clear of fourth-placed,
Borussia Monchengladbach.
